Getting Licensed

Interested in Selling Insurance | Lesson 6

Keeping Your License Current

Before we wrap up this module on getting licensed, we need to talk about continuing education, or CE for short.

Most state insurance licenses will be valid for a period of two years, but there are some requirements to maintain it, or what we like to call “keeping it current.”

Each state will have some required amount of continuing education credit hours during a license term. That’s how you stay up to date with the newest legislation and rules in the industry.

Most states require 24 credit hours, which includes 3 hours of ethics training during every 2-year license term.

Some states will have different credit hour requirements, license-terms, or even specific courses to take.

Be sure to check with your DOI or WebCE for specific CE requirements and opportunities to keep your license in good standing.

As I just mentioned, continuing education credits are a great opportunity to expand your knowledge or just refresh yourself on familiar topics.

We recommend spreading out those CE credit opportunities throughout the two-year period, so you’re not left scrambling to get credits at the last minute before your license expires.

And one of the added perks to joining an FMO like Ritter, we periodically offer webinars and seminars that count towards your CE credit hours.

Agents can also use WebCE to take their training courses. We’ve mentioned them a few times in this module already. Our agents get a discount on select CE opportunities as another perk of partnering with us.

CE credits are definitely something to consider as you’re working out who you’ll partner with as you move through your journey of becoming an independent insurance agent.
